Compress Image
Make a JPG, PNG or WebP file smaller and see exactly how much you saved before you download. The image is re-encoded by your own browser, so nothing is uploaded to ImageTidy.
Processing happens in your browser. Your images are not uploaded to ImageTidy.

Lossy vs lossless
Lossy formats such as JPG and WebP make files smaller by permanently discarding detail your eye is least likely to miss. A quality setting controls how aggressive that is. Lossless formats such as PNG keep every pixel exactly as it was and only pack the data more efficiently, so the savings are smaller and depend heavily on the image content.
JPG and WebP quality
Around 80–85% quality is a good default: files usually drop dramatically in size with no obvious difference on screen. Below roughly 60% you start to see blocky patches in smooth areas such as skies, and halos around text and hard edges. Compare the before and after preview at full size before you commit — quality is subjective and depends on the image.
How PNG behaves here
PNG has no quality slider, because there is no quality to trade away. Re-encoding a PNG can shrink it, but it can also produce a slightly larger file than the original if the original was already optimised by another tool. When that happens the tool tells you, rather than pretending a saving occurred. For photographs, converting a PNG to JPG or WebP usually saves far more than re-encoding the PNG — the image converter does that.
When compression is worth it
- Web pages and online stores, where large images slow down loading.
- Email attachments and upload forms with a maximum file size.
- Cloud storage and backups of large photo sets.
- Messaging apps that would otherwise re-compress your image for you.
If the image is also much larger on screen than it needs to be, resizing first and then compressing saves far more. Resize the image first, then come back here.
