Which format should you use?
- JPG — best for photographs. Small files, wide support, no transparency. Every save re-compresses the image, so avoid repeatedly editing and re-saving the same JPG.
- PNG — lossless, supports transparency. Ideal for logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text. Files are large for photos.
- WebP — modern format supporting both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency. Typically 25–35% smaller than a comparable JPG or PNG, and supported by all current major browsers. Some older desktop software still cannot open it.
Transparency
PNG and WebP can store an alpha channel, so transparent areas survive a conversion between them. JPG has no alpha channel at all — the format simply cannot record “nothing here”. When you convert transparent content to JPG we fill those areas with white, which is why a logo with a transparent background becomes a logo on a white square. If you need the transparency, choose PNG or WebP instead.
Common conversions
PNG to JPG for a screenshot that is far too large to email. JPG to WebP to speed up a web page. WebP to JPG or PNG when an older application refuses to open a WebP file. PNG to WebP to keep transparency while cutting the file size.
Converting changes format, not dimensions. To change the pixel size use the image resizer, and to trade quality for a smaller file use the image compressor.
